The Marlin 5 is our best-selling mountain bike, and the one we point most people at. It's the first step in the range to get Shimano's CUES drivetrain — noticeably crisper, tougher shifting than the 8-speed on the Marlin 4 — plus proper Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and a lockout fork. Gen 3 geometry is slack and stable enough for real trails, but it's still a comfortable, upright bike for the school run or the commute into Dundee.
Why we rate it
- Shimano CUES 9-speed with an 11–46 cassette — wide-range gearing that'll get you up Fife's steeper climbs, and Linkglide tech that lasts far longer than old-school chains and cassettes.
- Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes — confident, low-effort stopping in the wet.
- SR Suntour XCT 30 fork with hydraulic lockout for smooth sections and tarmac.
- Alpha Silver aluminium frame with internal cable routing, dropper-post routing, rack and kickstand mounts, and 2.4" tyre clearance.
- 29" wheels on M and up, 27.5" on XS and S so smaller riders get the same handling.
Who it's for
New and returning riders who want a real mountain bike that'll handle trail centres, forest tracks and everyday riding without needing upgrades straight away. If you're choosing between the 4 and the 5, the extra £100 for CUES is worth it.

Popup
Carefully consider when and where to use popups. Studies show that popups which show too soon are more likely to be closed and ignored.
Tip: You can add popups to the Overlay Group to make them appear on all pages, or to the Template to make them show just for a particular template.
