The Marlin 4 is where the range starts, and it's a proper mountain bike from the first ride: the same Gen 3 Alpha Silver aluminium frame as the rest of the Marlin family, a suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes and a simple, reliable 1x8 Shimano drivetrain. Nothing to fiddle with, nothing to break. It's the sensible first MTB for teens, students and anyone getting back on a bike.

• Shimano ESSA 1x8 — a single chainring and an 11–45 cassette means no front derailleur to fuss with, and a low enough gear for the hills.
• Tektro hydraulic disc brakes — real stopping power with light lever effort, even in Scottish weather.
